Becoming

I find myself most attracted to art that is about something, that has a message to relate, a lesson to teach or an experience to share.

The concepts in my work come not just from my head but also from the flow of spirit and my heart's concerns. I agree with those who believe that there are no longer grand narratives to explain the whole world and that each of us must continue to reformulate our questions and seek new answers as we learn and grow. My sculptures are the physical manifestation of these questions and answers. They come from time in nature and conversations with friends and family, from readings and workshops, or from adventures and travel.

The chrysalis pieces are reflections of my thoughts on protection, retreat, rebirth, rejuvenation and comfort.

With my Ancestresses & Wise Women, I explored my experience with female mentors and matriarchs and the lessons they have taught me.

The process of making sculpture - the welding, the grinding, the weaving, the carving, the contemplation - helps me work through the questioning, allows me to meditate on answers, to experiment with symbolism and message and to try to be at peace with uncertainty...

Making sculptures reconnects the different part of my life to my soul and, when I re-emerge from my studio, I feel more whole.
